Chennai: By-polls will not happen, insist Opposition parties

DMDK treasurer Pre-malatha Vijayakanth too had made an identical statement before the media a couple of days back.

Chennai: While the ruling AIADMK has announced its 'ministerial managers' for the 20 constituencies expected to go for by-polls and the rival AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran insists his candidates would win them all, most opposition parties are saying these elections will never be held.

“The ruling party has been scared of facing even the two by-elections (Tiruvarur and Thirupparankundram). They (AIADMK) do not have the guts to go before the people, so the by-elections in these 20 constituencies will not happen for now”, said TN Congress president Su. Thirunavukarasar.

“We are expecting the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu to take place along with the Lok Sabha polls next year. There will be no elections in these 20 constituencies”, the Congress leader told reporters here on Wednesday.

Echoing similar views, PMK leader Dr Anbumani Ramadoss told reporters at Dharmapuri that the state Assembly elections would be held along with the Parliament poll next year since the ruling party is scared of going before the people in these 20 constituencies. “They are scared of elections and that's why they have not held even the local body elections”, he said.

DMDK treasurer Pre-malatha Vijayakanth too had made an identical statement before the media a couple of days back. VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan has demanded that the Election Commission should take steps to hold the by-elections in the 20 constituencies before the end of December this year. “The 18 constituencies (TTV group) do not have elected representatives for one year and that has denied their people basic amenities and government care. This amounts to cheating those people, besides destroying electoral democracy”, he said in a statement here.
