Thiruvananthapuram: 96-year-old tops literacy exam
Thiruvananthapuram: Karthiyaniamma Krishnapillai, aged 96 years, has set a record by topping in the ‘Aksharalaksham’ examinations of Kerala Literacy Mission this year with 98 percent marks. She came first among 43,330 students who appeared for the examination this year.
The results were announced on Wednesday. Ms Krishnapillai of Cheppad, Haripad, in Alappuzha district was the oldest person in the state to write the examinations.
Ms Krishnapillai will receive a merit certificate from the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday at CM's Conference Hall. She appeared for the examination at Government Lower Primary School, Kanichanelloor, Cheppad.
Out of 43, 330 candidates, 42,933 students have qualified the examination. The project was started off on Republic Day this year. The objective of the project is to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the state.
Aksharalaksham test was conducted by Kerala State Literacy Mission across the state on Aug-ust 5.
As per the UNESCO norms, 90 per cent of the population should be literate to declare a state as complete literate. The Test covered topics including reading, writing, and Mathematics. The total marks for the examinations were 100 with those with at least 30 marks passing the examinations.
