Karnataka: Upendra gets into auto' gear for polls, launches party, takes on BJP

The actor claimed his objective was to change the system and it did not matter if he won three or 30 seats.

Bengaluru: Shedding the glamour of Sandalwood, well known Kannada film star Upendra appeared in a new avatar , wearing an auto driver’s khaki shirt to launch his Karnataka Prajnavanta Janata Party (KPJP) here on Tuesday and announced that the humble autorickshaw was likely to be his party’s symbol.

Clearly trying to strike a chord with the common man, the actor, who was accompanied by his wife, Priyanka, said khaki would be his party’s colour as well. Interestingly, a large number of auto drivers were present in the audience at the launch of the party in the city.

Popularly known as Uppi, the actor claimed his objective was to change the system and it did not matter if he won three or 30 seats in the coming elections to the state assembly.

“It may be three or 30, it is immaterial. But we must work to change the system. I have created a platform for you. Those who are passionate can join me. It has always been my dream to make a difference. Our work should help to create a better society. Those who get elected must become public workers and help improve the conditions of the people," he said, warning his supporters, “If you indulge in in politics, you will make enemies. But if you work for the people, you will be loved.”

But indicating that he was up for a challenge, the actor took on the BJP and took potshots at the Swachch Bharat programme launched by its government at the Centre. "When the Centre announced schemes like Swachch Bharat, I was really happy. But how far has this plan been implemented? Our drains and streets are still dirty. Where is the accountability? To what extent have they accomplished the clean- up drive? Why is there no information from the elected representatives about this?"he demanded.

Spelling out his party's priorities, he listed education, health insurance for all, good infrastructure, smart villages, agricultural development, encouragement of small scale industries and promotion of local talent among them.

The actor- turned -politician also revealed that the party would field candidates from all 224 constituencies in the state. "We have 60 to 70 candidates for the elections as of now. They all share our objectives, ” he added, also announcing that an app would be launched soon and the party’s website would be up and running on November 10.

“Anyone can register and help. Anyone who has ideas related to policies can send them across,” he added.
