Bengaluru: November 5 new deadline to fill potholes

Bad roads, maintenance of storm water drains discussed at BBMP Council meeting. CM to take city tour on November 6 to inspect work.

Bengaluru: The chief engineers and their sub-ordinates of every ward were told to cover all potholes before November 5, as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah plans to go on a city tour on November 6.

The officials were warned that if any pothole was left uncovered they will face action.

At the first BBMP council held under the leadership of new mayor Sampath Raj on Tuesday, the main focus was on issues such as potholes, flooding, maintenance of storm water drains (SWD) and several other problems. The recent rains, which had set a new record, had wreaked havoc in the city and claimed several lives due to flooding in many areas. Many roads also got damaged to inundation.

The Mayor summoned chief engineer from all the zones in the city and sought details regarding the number of potholes and those that are yet to be filled. He also collected details from corporators about the work related to potholes and clearing of storm water drains.

While the engineers claimed that after the rains, the city had more than 20,000 potholes and only 4,000 are yet to be filled, the corporators argued that in their respective wards many potholes still remain to be fixed and lamented that engineers were treating the issue casually. The mayor then warned the chief engineers. “The necessary funds to fill the potholes were approved and the chief engineers should ensure that every pothole is filled by November 5. The CM has planned to carry out an inspection and any pothole left uncovered will result in the suspension of the chief engineer and his sub-ordinates of the respective zone.”

BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad assured that the BBMP officials were on the job and they will fill all potholes before November 5. “The work is being supervised by senior officials and any laxity by officials will be dealt in serious manner,” he added.
