Hyderabad: Booze diet for prize bull violates rights, says Activists
Hyderabad: The diet fed to Virat, the famous Murra bull from Haryana, which was a major attraction at the Sadar festival here, has invited the wrath of animal rights activists.
Experts on animal welfare say that it’s a violation of “freedom of natural behaviour” as the animal’s diet includes whisky in winter and beer in summer.
Ms Vasanthi Vani, president of Blue Cross and secretary of Peoples for Animals said, “There are five fundamental rights of animals. 1. Freedom from hunger; 2. From thirst; 3. Freedom to get medical aid; 4. To have shelter; and 5. Freedom to natural behaviour.
“By feeding the bull whiskey and beer, they are violating the right of freedom of natural behavior. When we make an animal do anything unnatural, it is in violation to their rights. India has some of the best animal welfare rules, but unfortunately though the laws exist, there is no implementation of the same.”
Dr Laxmi Srinivasan, director of Animal Care Clinic added, “Consum-ption of alcohol will cause liver cirrhosis and liver hepatitis. The alcoholic diet will make the bull addicted to it.”
