Hyderabad: 6 injured in eyes during Diwali festivities

A team of five eye experts had been set up at the hospital to monitor accidental injuries during Diwali.

Hyderabad: Careless use of firecrackers during Diwali landed six patients in the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital with critical eye injuries. Thirty others with burns around the eye were treated as out-patients.

Three of the six were children. They were injured when the crackers went off close to their face.

Dr Atul Gupta, senior ophthalmologist said, “The six patients are very critical. They have been admitted as there is damage to their eye-balls. They require further evaluation in terms of scans and tests.”

The mother of 11-year-old Sandeep from Hashmatpeth, said he was going to light a cracker when another cracker close by exploded suddenly. “The flames went into his eyes and burnt the skin and the pupils,” she said.

In the case of two adults whose eye balls were damaged, a senior doctor said, "We are not sure whether their eye-sight will be restored but it is too early to conclude.”
