Telangana Cabinet likely to scrap VRO posts, officials oppose move
Hyderabad: A state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao would be held at Pragati Bhavan in the city on Tuesday, where he is expected to hold discussions on the new Revenue Bill, despite the stiff resistance from revenue employees on a new Bill.
After receiving a report from the intelligence agencies that corrupt practices have increased in the revenue department, the CM has decided to revamp the existing law and also ensure that farmers do not face any problems because of the new law.
The state government is contemplating the remove of all the village revenue officers (VRO) posts and transfer them to the agriculture department to work as agriculture extension officers, sources in the government, said. Currently, Telangana has around 4,500 VROs in the revenue department.
The role of the VROs is expected to be handed over to village secretaries.
Meanwhile, it is learned that the government has plans to merge the village revenue assistants into the panchayat raj department. The existing powers with tahsildars are also expected to be shrunk within the new law.
As several amendments were still pending before the budget session, the same would be proposed during the Cabinet meeting to be held on Tuesday. An assembly session might be held after Dasara for one day to get the new revenue bill passed, if necessary, sources said.
Meanwhile, the VROs have expressed their objection over bringing the new bill. “If the bill creates troubles for VROs, we would not allow it. We will carry out agitations across the state,” said G. Satish, president, Telang-ana VROs Association.
