Karnataka govt to relook at way 28 Jayanthis are celebrated
Mangaluru: The state government propose to review the manner in which the 28 jayanthis of prominent personalities are celebrated in Karnataka.
The government spends about Rs 65,000 in each district for each Jayanthi celebration.
Tourism Minister C.T. Ravi who also holds charge of the Kannada and culture department, told reporters after the review meeting in Mangaluru that the government wants to have a relook at the way in which the jayanthis are being celebrated to make them more fruitful and ensure more public participation. He also clarified that there was no political motive behind this move.
“During my state tour, I have been told that instead of these jayanthis attracting people at large, they are restricted to a particular community (to which the personality belongs),” he said. “So we have decided to review the way these Jayanthis are being celebrated. In every district we will obtain the opinion of social thinkers and academicians on this. The Deputy Commissioners of the districts should submit a report which will be placed before the cabinet for a decision,” he added.
