Anti-Corruption Bureau arrests senior asst in ESI scam

The AO colluded with other accused officers P. Padma, joint director and M. Radhika, a pharmacist.

Hyderabad: Senior Assistant Mudimela Surendernath Babu serving at the ESI hospital in RC Puram in Sangareddy district was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau on Monday on charges of corruption and misconduct.

This comes after the arrest of seven government officials, including the director of the Insurance Medical Service, Dr Ch Devika Rani, who are all accused of cheating the government.

Investigations revealed that Ms Devika Rani, in collusion with other officials, prepared fake indents and falsified records, violating the rules for purchasing medicines and surgical kits and caused a loss of Rs 11.69 crore to the exchequer.

Senior Assistant Mudimela Surendernath Babu allegedly called the in-charge medical officer, Patancheru, and insisted he sign the indent for medicines to be used in a medical camp though no medical camp was conducted. The AO colluded with other accused officers P. Padma, joint director and M. Radhika, a pharmacist. With the arrest of the senior assistant, the number of those arrested in the scam stands at eight.

Surendranath Babu has been charged under section 13 (1) , 7 (a), 13 (1) (a), 12 r/w 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
