Woman ends life over NRC fears

The incident took place at No. 1 Dolabari village, 4 km from Tezpur.

Guwahati: A woman in central Assam’s Sonitpur district allegedly committed suicide shortly before 10 am, when the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was released.

The incident took place at No. 1 Dolabari village, 4 km from Tezpur. Residents told the local media that the victim, Shayera Begun, jumped in a well in the backyard of her house.

“She was tense over her inclusion in the NRC,” said one of the villagers, adding that she thought non-inclusion would land her and her family in detention centres.

Sonitpur Super-intendent of Police Kumar Sanjit Krishna dismissed the claim, saying, “The woman was mentally ill. We were told that she jumped into the well and committed suicide. Names of all the members of the family were included in the NRC.”

Assam Government claimed that many genuine Indian citizens have been left out of the final NRC but they need not panic as they can appeal to the Foreigners Tribunal.
