India sports playing nation: Sachin Tendulkar
ALAPPUZHA: Cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar has said that Kerala must keep its large number of water bodies clean to attract more tourists. “The government is implementing the Swachh Bharath campaign to keep the country clean, as it is transforming from a sports-loving to a sports- playing nation,” he said while speaking as chief guest at the 67th edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race and debut Champions Boat League held at Punnamada lake here on Saturday.
Sachin appreciated the hospitality given to him by Kerala over the years and said, “I think of Kerala in connection with water sports. Even from the time of my forefathers, the ties with Kerala were strong,” he added.
He also asked women to be active in sports to remain physically and mentally healthy and lead a happy family life. “Practise hard, plan thoroughly and execute well. If you fail, then get back to your feet and return strong. Stay fit, find employment and lead a happy life,” Sachin told the women.
Earlier, Sachin was accorded a warm welcome by the organisers. He conducted a boat cruise in the river along with traditional Kathakali artists on board. The spectators blew bugles, sang songs and chanted slogans while greeting Sachin.
