Chennai: Flutter at airport as monkey sneaks in

They spread a net, hoping to catch it, but the monkey was clever enough not to venture into the trap.

CHENNAI: Chennai airport witnessed a mild flutter on Saturday morning, as a monkey sneaked into the departure terminal, to the surprise of everyone there.

Though the simian did not attack anybody, it has left forest officials anxiously planning its capture.

Sources said the monkey entered the terminal around 7 am on Saturday.

Passengers were shocked and panicked as it went prancing around. Since entry of animals and birds into the security area is against airport laws, airport officials tried to capture the monkey.

They spread a net, hoping to catch it, but the monkey was clever enough not to venture into the trap. Soon, airport officials sought the help of the forest department’s wildlife wing. The latter set up a trap with ‘goodies’ like bananas, puffed rice and fried gram placed inside, but again it was futile.

Velachery forest ranger, Mohan, said the monkey is avoiding the trap. He said that they would use a bigger cage and trap the monkey soon. This is not the first time that an animal has entered the airport terminal.

On February 2018, two monkeys entered the departure hall of the international airport here, triggering panic among passengers and airport officials. However, after a few hours of struggle, forest officials managed to secure them.
