Chennai: 2,000 cops for 2,600 Vinayaka idols

Police have also identified sensitive areas in the city and additional force would be deployed there.

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai police have made elaborate security arrangements for Vinayaka Chathurthi, with over 2,000 personnel being deployed across the city.

Police sources said, “There will be 2,000 personnel both from the police and home guards deployed across the city, mainly to maintain law and order. Police said they would be working with other departments like TNEB, fire and rescue services and Chennai corporation. Those setting up pandals must get 'no objection' certificates (NOC) from concerned departments. Police personnel will be on the rounds to make sure the day passes off smoothly.”

“At this time, we will check the identity cards of the organisers and also NOC documents,” the source added.

This year, permission has been granted to immerse 2,600 Vinayaka idols, while it was 2,700 last year. Police have also identified sensitive areas in the city and additional force would be deployed there.

“There are rules to be followed. This year, we will register cases against those who use loudspeakers. The height of idol must not exceed the sanctioned limit. Digital banners are not allowed at the pandals. Also, flags, flexes, posters or banners of political parties, are not to be displayed.” said a source.

This time, 5,000 policemen will be deployed when devotees immerse the idols in water bodies. Police are also in the process of identifying idol immersion points. People should immerse the idols only in designated places notified by the district administration and police. The permitted places are Marina Beach, Pattinampakkam, Srinivasapuram, Ramakrishnan Nagar Ennore, Thiruvottiyur, Kasimedu fishing harbour and Neelankarai.
