Hyderabad: A senior police officer said that during regular cordon and search operations in the city and its outskirts, the police has found arou-nd 5,000 Rohingya, Muslim refugees from Myanmar who have fled the brutal crackdown by the military
A majority of the Rohingya are staying in the city and some others may have settled in major towns in the state and are yet to be traced. During their interrogation, police got to know that a majority of the refugees had come from UP, Old Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Assam and Odisha. Some have chosen to settle in rural areas so that they don’t get noticed.
A senior officer said that some 4,300 Rohingyas have been counted in the city; they live mostly in Balapur and Babanagar in the Old City and in Shaheen-nagar and Kishanbagh.
He said that the foreigners’ wing of the special branch of the city police has collected their fingerprints and other personal details so that they cannot get Aadhaar or ration cards. He said the UNHCR has provided Rohingyas with a card for availing health facilities.
