Wayanad to prepare master plan for land utilisation soon

Kalpetta: Wayanad district is all set to prepare a master plan for land utilisation considering the ecologically hypersensitive zones of the district. Addressing a press conference on Friday, district collector A.R. Ajayakumar said that new rules would be in place soon insisting on the height and width of buildings in each zone after conducting a scientific study over the issue.

It is to be recalled that Wayanad district has been facing a new phenomenon of crevices being developed on land posing threat to houses and other buildings. Such incidents were reported from Tirunelli, Edavaka, Thavinjal and Vythiri panchayats.

The district administration also distributed Rs 7 crore in total as flood relief fund. Elaborate measures are also on to check the spread of diseases including leptospirosis and diarrhea in the post flood period, he pointed out.

Mr Ajayakumar also warned of strong action against secretaries of local administrative bodies against issuing orders suo moto to cut down trees on government land without consultation with other departments.

Briefing on the meeting of the District Development Committee, Mr Ajayakumar said that 254 tonnes of waste was collected after the Clean Wayanad campaign of which 99 tons was plastic waste and 7 tons e-waste. Directions were also given to local bodies to identify space to segregate the waste and to inform the district coordinator of Haritha Kerala Mission for the process.
