UDF petitions Governor P Sathasivam for judicial probe
Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala on Friday submitted a UDF petition to Governor P. Sathasivam seeking a judicial probe into the alleged mishandling of the flood situation by the government. The petition wanted a probe into the simultaneous opening of all dams which caused the floods.
The Opposition also asked the government to form a separate account for the donations received to the flood relief fund. The Governor forwarded the petition to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for appropriate action. Later, he told reporters that the Opposition had also sought a probe into the lapses in the functioning of the State Disaster Management Authority.
They proposed the setting up of a tribunal to disburse compensation to all genuine applicants within three to six months. They wanted to ensure that such man-made disasters do not happen in the future, he said. The government cannot be intolerant towards criticism and the Opposition will point out lapses on the government’s part continuously, he said. “I donated my salary to the CM’s disaster relief fund before anyone asked,” Mr Chennithala wrote in his Facebook post.
