Dog attack: 3 BBMP officials held for negligence

Soon after the incident, BBMP officials visited the area and rounded up nearly a dozen stray dogs.

Bengaluru: The HAL police on Friday arrested three Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) officials after street dogs mauled an 11-year-old boy, leaving him grievously injured.

The incident occurred near Vibhuti Nagar Lake at K.R. Puram on Wednesday where about 10 street dogs attacked Praveen, a class six student when he was playing with his friends. He was rushed to Manipal Hospital, where he is said to be out of danger.

A day after the incident, the police, based on a complaint filed by victim’s mother Murugamma, arrested three BBMP officials, Dr Shriram, assistant director, Arun Muthalik Desai, senior veterinary doctor, both from Animal Husbandry division of the Mahadevapura zone, and Ravishankar, the contractor.

The police booked the trio under Sections 289 (negligent conduct with respect to animal) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). The police said that Praveen was playing with his elder brother and other friends around noon when street dogs started barking at him. He ran to save himself but the dogs chased him and mauled him.

The dogs ran away when Praveen’s friends threw stones at the dogs. Praveen who collapsed on the ground bleeding was rushed to Manipal Hospital. On Thursday, Praveen’s mother approached the HAL police and filed a complaint against BBMP officials. Soon after the incident, BBMP officials visited the area and rounded up nearly a dozen stray dogs.
