Chennai: Chief election officer holds all party meeting

According to official sources, the correction work for this year's electoral rolls will begin on Saturday once the draft list is released.

Chennai: With the Election Commission of India gearing up for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, state Chief Electoral Officer Sathyabrata Sahoo on Friday held a meeting with representatives of recognised political parties at the Secretariat here to get their views on the release of the draft rolls.

According to official sources, the correction work for this year's electoral rolls will begin on Saturday once the draft list is released. Those who have completed 18 years of age by January 2018 will be eligible to have their names included in the list. Any other change, such as addition and deletion of names in the voters' list can also be made at the special camps being held at various places across TN on September 9 and 23 and on October 7 and 14.

It may be recalled that the Law Commission had on Thursday endorsed the Modi Government's proposal to hold simultaneous polls to the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies, saying that would prevent the country from constant election mode, besides saving huge public money and reduce burden on the administrative and police machinery.

Speaking to reporters at Salem, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the AIADMK had already made known its stand that the present Assembly should be allowed to complete its five-year-term (2021) as mandated by the people, but the party was prepared to face the polls anytime they are held.
