Chennai: A petition has been filed in the Madras high court halting state government from converting the once a power centre and residence of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, ‘Veda Nilayam’, at Poes Garden since she was a convict in disproportionate asset case.
In the petition, Thangavelu of Musiri taluk of Tiruchy, submitted that the Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on August 17 announced that the ‘Veda Nilaiyam’ would be converted into a memorial. He said Jaya was found guilty and convicted by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate asset case.
The house of a convict in the criminal case cannot be made as a memorial and it would be an illegal move. He pointed the observations made by Supreme Court in disproportionate wealth case that all the financial transaction took place in the Jaya’s Poes Garden house. If such a place converted into a memorial it would create a bad precedent. Hence, he sought the court to stay government move and also sought to quash the announcement of Chief Minister.
