Hyderabad: Man held for torturing wife attempts suicide, hospitalised

On August 1, they ran away and got married. A missing case was registered at Saroornagar police station.

Hyderabad: A 22-year-old man who was arrested by Saroornagar police for assaulting his wife and harassing her for dowry allegedly attempted suicide by jumping in front of an RTC bus on Thursday.

Though police claim that Christopher fled when asked to sign on documents and accidentally came under the bus, he said that he was tortured by cops at the police station.

Christopher hailing from Tandur in Vikarabad district fell in love with one G. Sumalatha. She was studying nursing at a private college, while Christopher worked at a lodge in Nampally.

On August 1, they ran away and got married. A missing case was registered at Saroornagar police station.

Later, cops found the two were staying together at ECIL. Meanwhile, Chris-topher suspected that she had a relationship with another person, attacked her with a stone and injured her on her face and other parts. Fed up, Sumalaltha went to her maternal house and filed a complaint with Saroornagar police and a case of attempt to murder and dowry harassment was booked. He was arrested on Thursday and brought to the police station.

“I assaulted her but she loves me. Her father is trying to separate us and the police is supporting him. Please save me from them and unite me with my wife,” Christopher said.

Saroornagar inspector S. Lingaiah said if he was tortured and the medical report will prove it.

“He tried to escape from being sent to prison. The CCTV cameras in the police station will show the same. It was fortunate that the bus driver applied sudden brakes. He suffered injuries on his legs. He will be produced in court after doctors declare him fit,” the inspector said, adding that he was arrested twice by Tandur police for involvement in various other cases.

Cops said that though they stay in ECIL, a case was registered in Saroornagar as she went missing from a hostel in Saroornagar and the second case is continuation of the missing case.

Meanwhile, doctors treating Christopher said that he is under observation in ICU.
