Why stop Assembly works: Telangana high court

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday wondered why should it stop the newly created state of Telangana establish a separate identity by constructing a new Legislature complex.

This observation was made by the bench whi-le adjudicating a batch of PILs and writ petitions challenging the government’s decision to demolish of Errum Manjil and construct new Legislature complex.

Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan posed this question to the counsels for the petitioners challenging the demolition, during the hearing. Apart from the CJ, the bench comprised of Justice Shameem Akther.

The CJ has also cited the incidents of raising new high-rise building with special dome for the Assembly buildings in Bhopal, Jaipur and Chandigarh.

Mr Nalin Kumar, a counsel appearing for one of the petitioners in the batch of PILs, stated that they have no objection in the decision taken by the government to construct a new building for Assembly.

However, the counsel said that they would be happy if the new Ass-embly is built on vacant land rather than demolishing the heritage structure.

Continuing his arguments on the continuous third day, the counsel submitted HMDA rules on Heritage structures. The cases were adjourned to Thursday for further hearing.
