The day that came back to haunt SM Krishna

The cremation site was chosen as per the wishes of Siddhartha\'s mother Vasanthi Hegde at an open field in the estate.

Bengaluru: The last day of the month of Ashada-veteran politician S.M. Krishna will never forget, for the most soul crushing moments of his life happened on the day. It was on July 30, 2000 that Mr Krishna faced the biggest challenge of his tenure as CM with the abduction of thespian Dr Rajkumar by forest brigand Veerappan on the last day of 'Ashada'. Dr Rajkumar was held captive by Veerappan for 108 days while the state witnessed violence and rioting as the police force tried to track down and rescue the late actor and also restore peace and order.

On Wednesday, the last day of Ashada, it happened again when Mr Krishna, down with fever and a bout of cough, flew along with his wife Mrs Prema Krishna in a helicopter to Chikkamagaluru, to participate in the last rites of his son-in-law V.G. Siddhartha.
