Enhance procurement price of milk: Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Welfare Association

The government would act in such a way that the general public would not be affected.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Welfare Association is seeking enhancement of government procurement price of cow's milk to Rs 40 from the present Rs 27 per litre and buffalo milk to Rs 50 per litre from Rs 29.

A delegation from the Association which called on Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and put forth the demand, later told reporters that milk prices have not been raised since 2014. They expressed the hope that the government would soon revise the price and ameliorate their condition.

Recently, while reiterating the government's willingness to increase the milk procurement prices, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami hoped that the Opposition parties would not agitate against the hike in milk prices for consumers.

“When the procurement prices are hiked for producers, the prices have to be increased for consumers too,” he said and added that several milk cooperative societies have become loss-making units due to lack of sustainable procurement price. When the issue was raised in the Assembly recently, the CM had explained the hardships being faced by milk producers and said they were suffering from shortage of drinking water and the increase in prices of cattle fodder.

“The government would act in such a way that the general public would not be affected,” Mr. Palaniswami said while hinting at increasing the prices of milk soon.
