Chennai: Proposal rejected, man beats up teacher on road

Irked by his love being rejected in this manner, Venkataraman accosted Saradha who was walking to home from school on Tuesday evening.

Chennai: A Chennai man's rage at having his proposal rejected by his friend school teacher nearly turned deadly on Tuesday when he attacked the woman brutally in full public view in Pallavaram.

According to the police, the victim Saradha*, 24, ( name changed), a resident of Perumal Kovil Street in Old Pallavaram, works as a teacher at a private school in Pallavaram. Saradha became friends with N.Venkatraman (29) of the same area before four back.

Sources alleged that Venkatraman had recently proposed to Saradha and she said 'no' and stopped being friendly with him. She blocked the accused on all social media platforms and started avoiding him.

Irked by his love being rejected in this manner, Venkataraman accosted Saradha who was walking to home from school on Tuesday evening. He allegedly misbehaved with her and compelled her to declare her love for him. When she refused again, Venkatraman started hitting her and went on to beat her brutally on Perumal Street in Pallavaram at around 3.15 p.m.

Hearing the victim's cry for help, passersby and the shopkeepers rescued the girl and caught Venkatraman.

The assailant was beaten by the people who later handed him over to the local police.

Based on the complaint by the victim, the Pallvaram police registered a case under TNPWH act (Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998) and arrested Venkatraman. He was produced before the court and lodged in prison.
