Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission directed an Inspector to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to a person for harassing him in the police station in Cuddalore district four years ago. The Commission recommended the government to take action against the cop.
In his petition, K. Baskar of Tittakudi submitted that P. Sandeep assaulted his son B. Anbuselvan in the village on September 11, 2015. When Baskar returned home, family members of Sandeep abused him. On September 12, 2015 he approached the Tittakudi Police Station to lodge a complaint. Without enquiring, K. Sudhakar, Inspector started scolding him using unparliamentary words. The Inspector also threatened to assault him if he came to the police station again.
Baskar lodged a complaint with the Assistant Superintendent of Police. As there was no response, he approached the commission seeking action against Sudhakar. In his reply, Sudhakar denied all the averments in the complaint as false. Baskar and his family members quarreled with Ponmudi's family frequently. Cases are pending against both the family members. Baskar approached the police without a draft of the complaint and pressurised the police to conduct an investigation immediately.
The SHRC member, Dr. A. Chittaranjan Mohandoss, a retired IAS officer, said Sudhakar had not provided sufficient documents to prove his defence. After examining the complaint, counter, depositions and all other records, the Commission came to the conclusion that the human rights of the complainant Baskar was violated by the Sudhakar.
The Commission directed the Government to pay a compensation of Rs50,000 to Baskar and recover the amount from Sudhakar. The Commission also recommended action against the cop.
