Bengaluru: Uncertainty over elevated corridor

A discussion is happening on the project, but now we cannot say anything since public consultation is due, the source added.

Bengaluru: Though Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had stated that he would even shelve the elevated corridor project if the citizens are opposed to it, a highly place BBMP source claimed discussions were on regarding who should be assigned the project. However there is little clarity regarding the future of the project.

"A discussion is happening on the project, but now we cannot say anything since public consultation is due. There is no clarity on the project so far," the source added.

The CM has directed the officials to prepare an environment impact assessment report on the elevated corridor project. The government has also said that it would give importance to public transport to ease traffic in the city.

KSPCB Member Secretary Ranga Rao said in 2003 it was thought that elevated corridor could resolve the issue of pollution, but he now believes that it will not completely solve the problem. "It will definitely ease traffic movement, but it will not solve the issue of pollution," he remarked.

Urban expert Ashwin Mahesh opined that the gaps should be fixed up in the current infrastructure, rather than creating new ones. "The government itself actually has a better plan - the Decongestion Committee report prepared earlier, which prioritises sustainable mobility and pedestrian transport," he pointed out.
