Chennai: Madras high court has directed the Union revenue secretary to answer its query relating to whether the imported vehicles with high speed engines have to be used after speed controlling/arresting devices are fitted during registration.
Pointing out that the state authorities are yet to answer the 16 queries raised by the court on earlier two occasions from 2015 relating to speed governors, Justice N. Kirubakaran said all these queries have to be answered by the respective authorities on or before August 21, failing which they shall appear before the court on August 22.
While dealing with an appeal against compensation awarded to the claimants, following a collision of two state transport corporation buses, in which 2 died and 29 injured, the judge had been issuing several directions to the authorities particularly relating to speed governors.
In his order, the judge said many vehicles viz two wheelers and four wheelers which can ply more than the legally permitted speed limit were imported into India from foreign countries and were used for racing, endangering not only the lives of the riders but also the innocent public.
“Hence, the secretary to government, department of revenue, ministry of finance, Government of India, New Delhi, is suo motu impleaded as respondent. Central government standing counsel Venkatesan takes notice on behalf of the newly impleaded respondent and he is directed to get instructions, as on what basis the high speed vehicles are allowed,” the judge added.
