Bengaluru: A 26-year-old security guard was killed on the spot, while two of his colleagues were injured after a newly erected iron gate inside the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) collapsed on them on Sunday afternoon. The deceased, Gowtham Biswal, hailed from Odisha, while the injured, who are undergoing treatment at a hospital, were identified as Anil Kumar (37) from Bihar and Vinayak (40) from Odisha.

According to the police, Gowtham had come to the city three years ago and was working at the IISc since then. On Sunday, as usual, he took guard at 6 am at the main entrance of the IISc. The incident occurred around 1 pm when Gowtham opened the gate for a car to enter the IISc premises. While closing the sliding gate, it derailed and fell on him. The other two guards rushed and tried to hold it, but the gate fell on all three of them.

Gowtham sustained severe head injuries and was killed on the spot, while the other two were rescued by the staff and rushed to a nearby hospital. The sliding gate, which weighed about 500 kg, was 6 feet high and 14 feet long. The gate was recently installed, but due to the unfinished work, it derailed and fell on the guards.

The Sadashivnagar police have taken up a case of causing death due to negligence against the engineer of the institution and the maker of the gate.
