MK Stalin opposes appointment of Rajendran as DGP

The appointment must be cancelled and he should be discharged from the duty to face the charges on gutka scam.

CHENNAI: Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin on Friday said the state government had shamed the police department by appointing TK Rajendran as DGP despite the charges of his involvement in the gutka scam. He said the police department is facing a crisis and asked, "How can honest police officials work under Rajendran?" The appointment must be cancelled and he should be discharged from the duty to face the charges on gutka scam.

Recalling that the bribery charges against Rajendran was raised by the DMK in the Assembly and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami promised to enquire into the charges. But, the DMK alleged that the probe would be an eyewash and walked out of the Assembly, he said, and added that its views were vindicated by Rajendran's appointment.

He also charged that the Centre is silent on such appointments to get the support of the ruling party in the Presidential elections. He urged the Union Home Ministry to intervene and appoint a police officer with leadership qualities after proper scrutiny.

The AIADMK had totally ruined the honour and leadership quality of the police department by appointing police officials who support the atrocities of the ruling party in elections, he said. Two years of extension were given to former DGP Ramanujam and the present DGP TK Rajendran had been appointed on the date of his retirement, Stalin said. Such a practice is hindering the promotions of ADGPs and this time too other senior officials with the required eligibility had been ignored.
