Bengaluru: Racers injure traffic constable

Races are also organised on service roads leading to the Outer Ring Road.

Hyderabad: On Thursday, the RGI Airport police arrested 27 bikers, including seven minors, for racing. Constable M. Narender, who tried to stop the bikers, was injured in the process.

Last fortnight, 40 bike racers were nabbed by the police in this area. Racing bikes at high speed has become a dangerous pastime on the outskirts of the city ever since police vigilance curbed racing within the city. The speed maniacs have shifted to the National Highway towards Bengaluru, particularly the stretch between Aramghar and Shamshabad, which is fairly isolated.

Police says they have intensified patrolling in this area too and are also counselling youths in surrounding areas.

According to the police, many racers from different parts of the city first go to the JP Dargah, and after prayers race with each other on the way back on the eight-kilometre Aramghar-Shamsh-abad road.

Races are also organised on service roads leading to the Outer Ring Road. Though no accidents have been reported recently, there is risk to motorists and the racers as well.

The 27 bikers caught for speeding on Thursday came from different parts of the Old city, Hasannagar, Rajendra-nagar, Nawab Saheb Kunta, Vattapally and other areas too. “They are racing for fun. All the bikes were seized and 20 persons were sent to judicial remand. Seven minors were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board,” RGI Airport sub-inspector L. Ramesh Naik said.

The minors were riding bikes owned by their fathers. Many of the others had no licence, and the insurance of 10 bikes had expired.

20 persons were booked for inflicting injuries to deter a public servant from doing his duty, and for rash driving and speeding. The parents of the minors were booked under Section 109 of IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act.
