Chennai: The Madras high court has refused bail to an accused arrested on March 18 in connection with the honour killing’ of Shankar at Udumalpet on March 13.
Dismissing the petition filed by accused V.Prasanna Kumar, Justice S.Vaidyanathan said, “Taking note of the fact that the charge sheet has been filed and preliminary investigation is over and considering the facts and circumstances of the case, I find no reason to grant the relief sought by the petitioner”.
The prosecution case was that on March 13, 2016, in a busy street near Central Bus stand, Udumalpet, the hirelings of the parents of Kausalya intercepted her and her husband Shankar and brutally hacked Shankar to death. Kausalya, who attempted to protect Shankar sustained grievous injuries.
The judge said the police had filed a counter stating that the daughter of accused one and two, who belong to the Thevar community, had fell in love with Shankar, who belongs to SC/ST category and married him on July 11, 2015, and the same was discouraged by the family members of Kausalya.
The parents and her uncle hired henchmen to murder both, for which the petitioner who also belongs to Thevar community, conspired with other accused. The petitioner monitored the couple right from the morning on the day of alleged occurrence and informed about their activity to the henchmen.
It was the petitioner, who identified the couple prior to occurrence to the henchmen and to substantiate the same, CCTV footage, speaks about the petitioner’s presence at the scene of occurrence and his involvement in the murder.
Release of the petitioner and the other accused would certainly endanger Kausalya’s life. The earlier bail application moved by the petitioner stood dismissed taking note of the fact that even after the murder of Shankar, there was an attempt to abduct Kausalya, the judge said.
