K Chandrasekhar Rao races for Olympics, sends team to study Rio
Hyderabad: Following in the footsteps of AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, his Telangana state counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao too is chasing Olympic dreams.
The TS government on Thursday initiated steps to host at least a few Olympic events in Hyderabad in 2028, if India is successful in bidding for the 2028 Olympics.
The government has decided to send a four-member official team to Brazil for the Rio Olympics to be held in August. The team has been asked to study and examine the infrastructure facilities that are required to host the Games. Officials said as per the revised Olympic norms, apart from the host city, other cities in a country can hold various Olympic events, and the TS government wants Hyderabad to be the front-runner among other cities if New Delhi is declared as the host city for the 2028 Olympics.
The state government has also nominated retired IAS officer B.V. Papa Rao, who is also an adviser to the government, retired IFS officer K. Bhoopal Reddy, who is special secretary to the CM, tourism secretary Burra Venkatesham and A. Dinakar Babu, VC & MD, Sports Authority of Telangana, to visit Rio.
Chief secretary Rajiv Sharma issued orders to this effect on Thursday. The team has been asked to visit all the stadia and sports villages in Brazil hosting Olympic events.
