Tiruchy: Woman, 12 goats die in wall collapse due to heavy rains

A portion of an old building collapsed on them, when they took shelter there from rain at Kottappalayam .

Tiruchy: Almost entire Tiruchy and its adjoining districts of Karur, Perambalur and Pudukkottai experienced moderate to heavy rains on Thursday night, accompanied by lightning, thunder and strong winds, giving the much needed respite to people from 'Kathri Veiyil' (agni nakchathiram).

Although the rains did not cause much of a damage, the strong winds uprooted more than 550 betel nut trees at Malayalapati village near Vepanthattai in Perambalur, and killed a goat when a portion of the thatched roofed shed collapsed in the same area.

The wind also severely damaged advertisement hoardings, signal posts in Perambalur town, official sources said.

In Tiruchy, a 27-year-old woman was killed on the spot and another woman injured and 12 goats died when a portion of an old building collapsed on them, when they took shelter there from rain at Kottappalayam near Thuraiyur in Tiruchy.

The deceased woman, Selvi, and two other women grazing heir goats in that area took shelter at the old building when the mishap occurred. Several places in Karur and Pudukkottai also got good rain.
