Kollam: Trawling ban takes effect from June 9 midnight

The marine enforcement and coastal police will enforce the ban deploying special squads along the coastline.

Kollam: This year’s trawling ban along the state’s 580-kilometer coastline will come into force from the midnight of June 9 till July 31. The marine enforcement and coastal police will enforce the ban deploying special squads along the coastline.

The fisheries department will make special arrangements to support the fishermen community in their drought days of trawling ban.

In Kollam, announcements on loudspeakers will be made on June 8 and 9 on land and the sea. On June 9 midnight, the spans of Neendakara bridge will be chained after shifting fishing boats on to the eastern side of the bridge. A special sea rescue squad will be operational round the clock, a meeting under sub collector A. Alaxander has decided.

The inboard engine and other small vessels which are not banned during this period will be given facility to go out to sea for fishing. A fuel bunk owned by the MatsyaFed near Sakthikulangara bridge will be operational for refuelling these boats.

Five private and three MatsyaFed bunks will be functional throughout the ban period in Kollam.

Police picketing will be enforced in all fishing harbours to check violation of ban order.

Fisheries department with the help of Marine Enforcement will introduce facility to manage trawling boats at Azheekkal harbour. More facilities will be arranged in the harbour with the support of harbour engineering department, said the sub collector.

The fisheries department has issued direction to the fishermen asking them to collect biometric cards. These cards can be collected from fishermen welfare office in Kollam, fisheries deputy director said.
