Kochi: Plant a tree in newborn’s name

According to mayor Soumini Jain, the initiative aims at increasing the number of trees per person in the city.

Kochi: The Kochi Corporation is implementing a unique programme named ‘A tree for a child’, as part of its environment conservation initiatives.

As per the programme, the parents of a new born in the city limits can plant and nurture a tree in the name of the newborn. When the infant is grownup, the tree will be handed over to his/her name.

The Corporation will provide the saplings for planting in association with Social Forestry Department. Those who do not have enough land or facilities to plant trees can plant them in public places.

According to mayor Soumini Jain, the initiative aims at increasing the number of trees per person in the city. “The unique project will be a role model for the entire country,” she claimed

The mayor will inaugurate the project by planting a tree in the name of 3-months old Niranjan Menon of Vipanchika house at MG Road on June 4, ahead of World Environment Day on June 5.

The green cover in the city is fast disappearing with many trees are being cut for development projects.

A big number of trees were axed for Kochi Metro project but the compensatory tree planting mission has not been successful. Many saplings planted across the city have been found destroyed, it was reported.
