Kaveripura was held by JD(S) for two terms. During the counting of votes, BJP managed a lead in all the rounds except the fourth round.

Bengaluru: BJP and Congress-JD(S) coalition on Friday bagged one seat each in the by-election to two BBMP wards - Kaveripura and Sagaipuram.

While BJP wrested Kaveripura from JD(S) by a narrow margin, Congress party candidate scored an emphatic win in Sagaipuram, with the BJP candidate losing his deposit.

Kaveripura was held by JD(S) for two terms. During the counting of votes, BJP managed a lead in all the rounds except the fourth round. BJP candidate Pallavi Channappa defeated her opponent and JD(S) candidate Susheela Suresh by 78 votes.

In Sagaipuram, Congress candidate Palaniammal defeated the nearest rival, an independent candidate, by a margin of 3,038 voters. The BJP candidate and leader of Pourakarmikas, A Jeyirium lost his deposit as he was able to secure just 639 votes.

With this by-election the BJP tally in the BBMP has gone up to 102. Soon after the BBMP poll results, an independent candidate Mamatha Saravana joined them.

Both the wards warranted by-elections following the death of Ramila Umashankar, who represented Kaveripura and Elumalai from Sagaipuram.

The BJP is likely to play with the numbers game during the next mayoral poll.
