Kozhikode: Women anti-alcohol campaigners under the aegis of Mahatma Gandhi Cultural Centre, an anti-alcohol and social service group, on Wednesday threatened self-immolation demanding the removal of an outlet from a residential area in Koorachundu near here.
The campaign witnessed the dramatic turn as protesters led by Thamarassery Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil poured onto streets against "the highway booze dens".
“We will be at the forefront of the fight against alcohol abuse as drunkards have blighted many marriages and families,” said Bindu N., one of the protesters.
"The government should think of prohibition rather than limiting it while shifting these outlets from towns to villages or residential areas. There are over 300 families in the area. If we allow this functioning here, there will be no safety for our daughters. We are scared," Echoing her sentiments, another woman said, "We will not allow the shop to function. We will fight it till the end."
