Groom terminates marriage after wife fails 'virginity test' instituted by Khap
Mumbai: A caste panchayat in Nashik has allowed a newly-wed groom to terminate his marriage in just a span of 48 hours, after he reported that his bride had ‘failed the virginity test’.
According to a media report, the panel of caste leaders allegedly gave the groom a white bed sheet a day after the marriage on May 22 and asked him to return it soon after the consummation of marriage.
Discovering the used bed sheet returned without any trace of bloodstains, the caste panchayat deemed that the girl was not a virgin, and allowed the groom to terminate the relationship.
The report added that the girl has been preparing for selection in the state police forces and was involved in strenuous physical activity such as running, cycling, long jump, and other exercises.
Representing the girl, a social worker in the area said that if the upcoming meeting with the caste leaders on Thursday did not bring about an amicable solution, a police complaint would be lodged.
It has to be noted that caste panchayat and kangaroo courts in any form is prohibited in the state of Maharashtra.
