Kozhikode railway station garden a big draw

The garden construction was started by the green club of Holy Cross College Nadakkavu .

Kozhikode: An impressively set up garden is the cynosure of eyes on the fourth platform premises of Kozhikode railway station.

The garden has been set up on 40 cents of land as a part of the railway beautification project.

Close to the garden is the installation of a steam locomotive, which is decades old. The garden construction was started on February 14 by the green club of Holy Cross College Nadakkavu and completed in a month.

The green club also bore the cost. Students of the college cleared the weeds encroached land and made way for an impressive garden.

"The students themselves come every morning and evening to water the garden," said railway station manager A.M Mathachan. Bougainvillaea, rose, red palm, champagne palm, heliconia and Cyprus flowers adorn the garden now.

Lush green grass and creatively laden pebble stones make the spot attractive.

But some plants had been destroyed a few days ago by miscreants, and the railway is mulling over fixing a fence around the garden.

"We are thinking to erect a fence. It is unfortunate that anti-social elements do such things," Mr Mathachan said.

The single A1 class station under Palakkad division, Kozhikode railway station was opened for traffic in 1888.
