Weed-filled lake escapes HMDA's radar, upkeep

The lake, which is entirely covered by hyacinth, resembles a field.

Hyderabad: Officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) are oblivious to the condition of Annarayani Cheruvu in Nagaram village of Kesara mandal.

The lake, which is entirely covered by hyacinth, resembles a field. Though locals have filed several complaints, officials have failed to even locate the lake so far.

When contacted, an official from the HMDA said that the hyacinth clearance works at Annarayani Cheruvu would be taken up in the second phase of the lake beautification project after the location of the lake is identified. He said that plans were also being laid for the setup of a sewage treatment plant.

“Unless the sewage is diverted or treated before its release, the clearance of the hyacinth will be futile,” he said. He added that the ground-level staff needed to first locate the lake before any action could be taken.

The official said the state had already taken up the beautification of 40 lakes at a cost of '441 crore in the first phase. “The aim is to breathe new life into these lakes by clearing the water hyacinth, cleaning the murky water, and make things convenient for residents living near these water bodies,” he said.
