Thiruvananthapuram: The medical college hospital here which was rocked by the incident of rodent biting off the toe of a patient is planning massive cleaning operations over the next one week with the help of Warehousing Corporation pest control experts. The warehousing corporation which has a contract with medical college hospital for pest control, will carry out operations in four phases.
Medical college authorities say one of the major problems being faced by the hospital is food waste. With many NGOs now supplying free food at the MCH, the food waste disposal mechanism needs to be improved considerably. Health minister had directed the hospital authorities to engage outside agencies for cleaning up the premises.
The corporation expert team will focus mainly on removing rats, mice, rodents, cockroaches and mosquitoes. It will be working on a specially designed rodent control programme to achieve better results. Most areas will be covered in a systematic manner including entry points, wards, cafeterias, rest rooms, water sources, external portions of the building and outer premises during the operation.
The decision to engage corporation for cleaning operations was taken after a patient admitted to ward 15 alleged that his toes were bitten off twice in seven days. Rajesh of Anchal was under treatment after sustaining injuries in a bike accident. Health minister K K Shailaja had taken strong view of the incident and directed the hospital authorities to immediately engage rodent control agency on contract to clear the hospital wards and premises of rats.
