Muvattupuzha Vigilance Court sends notice to K Babu

Summoned in disproportionate assets case.

Kochi: The Muvattupuzha Vigilance Court has received the chargesheet against former excise minister and Congress leader K. Babu in the disproportionate assets case.

The court sent a notice to Mr Babu to appear in person on July 2 when the hearing in the case would begin. This even as the minister is learnt to be approaching the High Court with a plea to cancel the chargesheet filed by Kochi unit of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau claiming the action was part of “political vendetta”.

The case against him and the two others was recorded in September 2016 following charges that he amassed assets disproportionate to known sources of his income while serving as an MLA and minister 2007-16.

As per the chargesheet, he was found to have amassed disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 25 lakh during the period. Though the VACB failed to find any direct evidence of him purchasing properties, he was mainly accused of spending a huge amount for the renovation of his house at Tripunithura and also for the marriage of his two daughters during the check period.

However, the investigation team could find no evidence to prove co-accused Babu Ram of Kumbalam and Mohanan of Tripunithura as his benamis.
