Protesting Pulwama students wave Pakistan flag, Burhan Wani photo
Srinagar: Irate crowds of students on Monday again clashed with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s southern Pulwama town. The police fired teargas and PAVA canisters to disperse the slogan chanting students who waved Pakistan’s national flag and also portraits of slain Hizb-ul-Mujahedin commander Burhan Wani during the protests. The slogans written on a black cloth banner they were carrying with them sought “death’ for the blasphemy of Islam Prophet.
Reports from Pulwama said that the students of the town’s Mehjoor Memorial Higher Secondary School boycotted their classes and took to the streets to demand release of fellow students arrested by the police during the recent student protests. The Principle of the institutions tried hard to pacify them but in vain.
The students marched towards the Government Degree College in Pulwama where already a protest was underway. During the ensuing clashes, the police took several students in custody. The witnesses said that when the march reached near Pulwama police station, some of the students threw stones at security personnel, who again lobbed teargas shells to disperse them. The clashes led to the closure of shops and other business establishments in the area, reports said.
