Landlords remain deaf to noise pollution in Hyderabad

Residents allege that the machines start from 10 am and continue till late in the nights.

Hyderabad: Residents of Jagadamba Nagar in Asifnagar are complaining of noise and dust pollution from the carpentry units that use machines in the residential area. Residents are irritated by the jarring sound of the machines that goes on till late at night, sometimes even on Sundays.

Residents allege that the machines start from 10 am and continue till late in the nights. The children, the patients, the aged and the public cannot have a sound sleep. Nothing has changed even after several complaints were made. The residents are worried the noise pollution may affect the hearing capacity of the people around the area.

Resident K Srikanth Reddy said, “The schoolchildren are getting disturbed during their study time. Several complaints were made to the landlord where this machinery is functional, and it was stressed that this is a residential area where one should not be running machines.’’

He adds, “We are worried such noise could affect the hearing capacity of the residents. I urge the authorities to take necessary steps so that students can concentrate more on their studies and people get a sound sleep. We will be thankful to the authorities if remedial steps are initiated at the earliest.’’

N Raveendhar, senior scientist at TSPCP, said, “If residents complain, we can visit the area and monitor the noise levels. We have not received any complaint from Asif Nagar. Another solution is to complain to the traffic police. We have prepared an action plan against noise pollution, according to which, as per GO172, anyone who is disturbing people via noise pollution after 10pm can be booked. People can complain to the police by dialling 100 or through HAWK Eye app’’.

“If the units are illegal, the police and the GHMC can cancel their trade licence. For immediate action, the residents should approach the police.’’

Shaik Shahabuddin, who owns a furniture showroom in Asif Nagar, said, “I have my showroom and a small factory in Asif Nagar and we have established our shop 20 years ago. Houses came in this area first, after which the business units came in. This area is famous for carpenters and their works. There are many shops and most have trade licence as well. As it’s my own firm, we start work and close shop whenever we feel like, sometimes we start at 7 in the morning.’’
