Thiruvananthapuram: Man arrested for flying drone

The accused Noushad of Sreekaryam was questioned by the police and special branch.

Thiruvananthapuram: The police on Sunday arrested a person in connection with the flying of a drone in the high security zone near the airport.

The accused Noushad of Sreekaryam was questioned by the police and special branch. The Valiyathura police has registered a case for flying a drone in areas near the security zone at night against norms. However, as the drone was in the Nano category of below 250 grams, no licence was needed for operating it. It was a Chinese-made drone which was gifted to Noushad by one of his relatives who is working abroad, as per his statement.

Noushad was taken into custody from Shangumukhom beach at 11 p.m. on Saturday after a drone was found in a damaged condition near the cargo complex of the airport by CISF officials. The drone was handed over to the police.

The remote of the drone was found with Noushad who was at the Shanghumughom beach along with his family.

The police would look into whether he had any role in the incidents of two drone-sightings at night recently.

On March 22 a drone was sighted between Kovalam and Kochuveli coastal areas over strategically important sites, including Vikram Sarabai Space Centre.

Another drone was flown over the police headquarters and Sreepadmanbha temple on March 25 and one near the secretariat on Friday night.

The drones were spotted soon after the centre warned of possible terror attacks using them.
