Rahul fighting the Left, says Pinarayi Vijayan

“Wayanad is only one among the 20 constituencies in the state and we will fight him like candidates in other places,” he said.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has criticised Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Wayanad and said it is a fight against the Left and not a battle against the BJP.

“Wayanad is only one among the 20 constituencies in the state and we will fight him like candidates in other places,” he said.

“None in the state will see Rahul Gandhi's candidature as a battle against the BJP,” he said. “He should have chosen a constituency where the BJP is strong. This is nothing but a fight against the Left," he said. The fight from Wayanad apart from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh cannot be seen as a symbolic fight, said Vijayan.

“Everyone knows that the fight in the state is between the Left and the Congress. As he decided to contest from Wayanad, the Left will try to defeat him," he said. Mr Vijayan also exp-ressed his displeasure over the Congress decision not to enter into an alliance with the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party to take on the BJP.

Referring to the Left’s stand if the UPA wins the elections, Vijayan said: “We have already fielded our candidate and he will take on Rahul.”

It cannot be said now whether Rahul’s candidature would be an obstacle to the formation of a secular government at the centre, he said. He also alleged that there was an alliance between the Congress, League and the BJP in two or three places. There was no need to change P. P. Suneer, the CPI candidate in Wayanad, he said.

“The first goal of the CPM is to defeat the RSS-led BJP government at the centre. We want to increase the strength of the Left parties in the Lok Sabha. The final goal is to form an alternative secular government,” he said.
