Police likely to book mom of tortured boy

The preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the boy was undergoing torture for the past several months.

KOCHI: The police may register case against the mother of the seven-year old child of Thodupuzha for not informing the police or the authorities concerned regarding the attack on him by her partner that was reportedly going on for months.

The preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the boy was undergoing torture for the past several months. "The woman's involvement in the case is being probed and, if necessary, an FIR will be registered against her," a police officer said.

The woman and the accused had earlier given a statement that they had gone for having food at Thodupuzha town past midnight leaving the children home. However, the police suspect the statement being a lie and a probe is also on into that.

The Child Line workers on Sunday expressed concern on leaving the protection of the younger child to the mother pointing out her irresponsible nature that led her to leave the children alone at home at night when the incident happened.

Meanwhile, the doctors treating the boy started feeding him through a Ryle tube inserted through his nose even as they maintained that the boy's brain is still dysfunctional.

Doctors said that the feeding is only to provide food to the boy and there has been no improvement in his condition. There wouldn't be an issue in digesting juice or rice water given through the tube as his organs, except for the brain, are functional due to ventilator support. However, his brain is still almost dysfunctional.Doctors had earlier said that the boy was exhibiting 'battered baby syndrome' (injuries sustained by a child because of physical abuse by an adult caregiver). The boy had suffered a subdural haemorrhage, a type of bleeding that often occurs outside the brain because of a severe head injury.
