India stops service of Samjhauta train
New Delhi: Railways has cancelled the operations of the Indo-Pak Samjhauta Express on its side from Thursday, which senior officials said was due to “purely operational reasons” as Pakistan had suspended services from across the border.
However, Pakistan, on Thursday evening sent out a notification saying that they will resume Samjhauta Express train service from Monday after a brief suspension.
Earlier, Pakistan’s federal minister for railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said that Samjhauta Express service from Pakistan to India was suspended in wake of escalating tensions between the both countries.
The train connecting Lahore in Pakistan and Atari and Delhi in India was scheduled to depart on Thursday at 8 am but was cancelled.
The Indian Railway Board has also suspended all operations of the Attari Special Express, Delhi-Attari-Delhi, which together with the Wagah-Lahore link is known as the Samjhauta or Friendship Express, from the train’s next scheduled run which is on Sunday.
“With no passengers from Pakistan, it makes no sense to run it on our end. The cancellation has been done purely for operational reason,” a source said.
