Kerala: Relief for schools against state fiat

The CBSE also said that it will not insist for the recognition certificate from the State Government immediately.

KOCHI: Amid threat of closure to CBSE, ICSE schools in the state from State Government, the CBSE has given assurance to the Kerala CBSE School Management Association that the affiliated schools which are seeking upgradation or extension of provisional affiliation will be given the same. The CBSE also said that it will not insist for the recognition certificate from the State Government immediately for enabling upgradation and extension of CBSE affiliation.

This assurance was given to Ms Indira Rajan, general secretary of the association when she met the CBSE chairperson Anita Karwal and CBSE secretary Anurag Tripathy the other day in New Delhi. Ms Indira Rajan raised before them the issues CBSE schools faced in upgradation and extension of provisional affiliation in the state.

The discussions were held as per the direction of the Minister of State for HRD Satyapal Singh who was petitioned over it. G Rajmohan, working president and S Ravi Namboothiri, organizing secretary of the association, also took part in the discussions. “With this assurance we feel that almost all CBSE affiliated schools in Kerala will get upgradation / extension of provisional affiliation as the case may be,” said Ms Indira Rajan.

“Further during the meeting, we had a discussion related to a circular from the Educational Department of Kerala (DEO/AEO) asking many schools to close down and shift the students from Class 1-8 to nearby government or aided schools as if they don’t have the permission for the same. In this context the CBSE chairperson clarified that composite affiliation includes affiliation for basic classes, that is Classes from I –VIII also,” Ms Indira Rajan said.

“All other current functional problems faced by CBSE schools were also discussed. They have assured that the same will be examined issue wise and appropriate decision will be taken early,” Ms Indira Rajan said. Nearly 1800 schools having classes up to VI and VIII are facing closure notice from the State Government for want of CBSE affiliation. This comes against the fact that CBSE allows application for affiliation only from Class IX. Many schools among 1400 affiliated schools also received notice saying that they cannot run classes up to Class VIII as they don’t have CBSE affiliation for these classes.
