Chennai: Over 27 lakh students to write CBSE class 10, 12 exams
CHENNAI: Over 27 lakh students are to write Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) class 12 and 10 exams which are scheduled to start on March 5 across the country.
Totally 11.86 lakh students will write class 12 exams - an increase of 7.95 per cent from last year. The exams will go on up to April 13.
Over 16.38 lakh students will appear for the mandatory class 10 board exams this year. The exam will be held from March 5 to April 4. Surprisingly, the number of students appearing for class 10 exams has come down by 29,541 compared to last year.
From Chennai region 1.94 lakh students will appear for the class 10 board exams and 71,442 students will sit for the class 12 exams.
CBSE has made board exams compulsory for class 10 students from this year and it also gave one-time relaxation in pass marks for the current batch students.
According to the relaxation, the class 10 students need not secure 33 per cent separately in board exams and internal assessments. The board has decided to implement overall 33 per cent pass mark criteria in the subjects which has both the internal and written exams.
“This relaxation will give a major relief to the class 10 students. They have appeared for annual exams which were based on only 50 per cent of portions as they were studying in the semester pattern. Now, they have to write board exams based on full portions,” said Radhika Unni, Principal, SBOA School and
Junior College, Anna Nagar.
“From next year onwards, students will be ready to face the board exams,” she said.
Ajith Prasad Jain, senior principal, Bhavan's Rajaji Vidhyashram also welcomed the board’s decision saying the current batch class 10 students were appearing for semester pattern exams from classes 6 to 9. “The students are finding it difficult to prepare for full portion exams and it's a good decision by the board,” he said.
